Conference "The Medieval Cemetery in Via Orfeo: History and Memory of Jewish Bologna" (13 December 2018)

cimitero via orfeo

17
Sala Prof. Marco Biagi, Complesso del Baraccano
Via Santo Stefano 119
The excavations carried out in via Orfeo by the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Bologna have brought to light the largest medieval burial ground in the city.

Further research has made it possible to identify this area as the medieval Jewish cemetery of Bologna. Over 400 burials, gold rings and work tools that tell the stories of a very lively and active group in the city both culturally and commercially. The exceptional discovery in via Orfeo is at the centre of a research project involving institutions and scholars with the aim of reconstructing the historical and social dynamics of the Jewish component of medieval Bologna.
