At the Jewish Museum of Bologna
Zamenhof’s Jewish origins, the education he received and the reality in which he grew up deeply influenced his path as a man, intellectual and subject of the Tsarist Empire. In his hometown, Białystok, the Jewish community, which was the numerical majority, lived on a daily basis alongside Russians, Poles, Germans and Lithuanians: all groups characterised by their own ethnic, religious and linguistic identity. Hence the considerable problems of mutual understanding and coexistence that Zamenhof tried to overcome by creating a “brand new” language: Esperanto. This is discussed by Ivan Orsini, Gruppo Esperantista Bolognese “Achille Tellini 1912”.
