The Shabbat
Shabbat is the seventh day of the week (the week begins on Sunday). It starts on Friday at sunset and ends on Saturday evening, one hour after sunset. Like every Jewish festival it begins in the evening, at sunset, because the Torah says of the creation: “And there was evening and there was morning”.
It is one of the foundations of Judaism and is held to be the most important observance of Jewish life. Since God created the universe and everything in it in six days and rested on the seventh, when night falls on Friday evening Jews set aside every kind of work done during the week and give themselves wholly to God, body and spirit, on the holy day of Shabbat.
