"Judaism and Muslim mysticism in medieval Egypt, between conflicts and contacts"

Egypt represents a privileged terrain for studying the relations and contacts between Judaism and Islam in the Middle Ages. But what was the impact of these contacts on religious doctrines and on the “representations of the Other” in the different communities? The lecture will seek to pose this question within the context of Sufism (traditionally defined as “the mystical dimension of Islam”), analysing narrative evidence and doctrinal theorisations by Sufi masters of Egypt in the Ayyubid (twelfth to thirteenth centuries) and Mamluk (thirteenth to sixteenth centuries) epochs concerning relations with Jews and Judaism. Giuseppe Cecere from the University of Bologna will speak about this.
